Nationals MP Darren Chester is calling for Australians to do everything they possibly can to help reduce the risk of grass fires and scrub fires.
“That means cleaning up around our own properties,” he told Sky News Australia.
“Also encouraging the state government to clean up on their property, clean up on the state’s parks and national parks which obviously are a major risk for fires.”
Mr Chester’s comments come after a blaze swept across Victoria’s east.
The state remains on alert for bushfires and flash floodings as the country endures an early start to fire season with summer-like temperatures.
“It is a bit earlier than normal, it’s not unheard of in our part of the world,” Mr Chester said.
“Keep in mind, we’ve had a very dry spring – September was one of the driest on record – and after a couple of really wet years.”
