The Greens are set to block the Albanese government’s new housing policy when it enters the House this week.
The proposed ‘Help to Buy’ legislation aims to help 10,000 buyers a year to pay smaller deposits and loans to get into the market.
However, the Greens claim the policy doesn’t do enough to relieve Australia’s housing crisis.
The party will block the bill in hopes it will increase pressure on the Treasurer to abolish negative gearing.
“Unless Labor is prepared to work with the Greens to fix negative gearing and capital gains tax handouts, cap rents and build public housing – the Greens will vote against Labor’s housing lottery bill in the House, and we reserve our position in the Senate,” Greens Leader Adam Bandt said.
