Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Birmingham says Australia will have to wait and see how the situation in Palestine unfolds as their Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh steps down.
“It is important there is a governance structure for Palestinian peoples that all can have confidence in,” he told Sky News Australia.
“Israel needs to have confidence that those who are stepping up as leaders within the Palestinian community and offering governance will do so in an environment that promotes security.
“That in no way tolerates terrorism or supports those who promote extremist views.
“The Palestinian people need to have confidence that there will be a government that puts their best interests first.”
