A child has died after being hit by a car in Melbourne’s east.
Victoria Police have launched an investigation into the death, which occurred late on Saturday night near New Hope Baptist Church in Blackburn North.
Police arrived at the scene, just off Springfield Road, at around 6:45pm where it is believed the child was struck.
Paramedics then worked to save the child, who’s age and gender have not been released by authorities, but they were unable to do so and pronounced the child dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle who hit the child stopped and attempted to assist after the collision.
They are now assisting police with their enquiries.
The circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain unclear, with detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit working to understand how events unfolded.
Saturday’s tragedy took the states toll for deaths on the road to 215 this year, a considerable increase on the 186 lost by this point in 2022.
It also came just hours before a man was killed in a separate crash in Cowes, on Phillip Island.
The driver of a car carrying four passengers is believed to have lost control before crashing into a tree at just after 11:30pm on Saturday.
One of those passengers, a 19-year-old man, died at the scene, while the remaining occupants were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities are continuing to examine the scene of the crash and are keen to speak with any witnesses.
Police said anyone who witnessed the incidents, has dashcam/CCTV footage or information which could shed light on the collisions is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
