Redbridge Group Director Simon Welsh says Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan is going to be faced with some “tough calls” about which projects to proceed with, shelve or postpone.
“We’ve already seen that with the Commonwealth Games to some extent – I think there is probably more of that in our future,” Mr Welsh told Sky News Australia.
This week has been pivotal for Ms Allan after she inherited the leadership and state gross debt is projected to surge to $239 billion by 2026.
Cost blowouts in projects Premier Allan was responsible for as a minister, such as the Suburban Rail Loop and the cancelled Commonwealth Games, have contributed to the financial woes.
“The political radar on which projects and how to frame those decisions … I think that’s going to be a real challenge going into the next election.”
