A man has been charged after a horror crash that killed a woman in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of where a stolen Mercedes allegedly collided with a Nissan Micra travelling in the opposite direction on Windsor Road at Burnside on Friday morning.
The crash occurred inside a school zone, near Burnside State School.
The driver of the Nissan, a 52-year-old Nambour woman, was trapped in the vehicle as bystanders attempted pull her from the wreckage.
She, however, died at the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 26-year-old Caloundra West man, allegedly fled from the crash on foot but was chased down by good Samaritans.
Queensland Police Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield earlier said the man allegedly tried to use another car to escape but was blocked by members of the community.
“We had some excellent community members here in Nambour who have actually followed that alleged offender from the vehicle,” Sergeant Mansfield told reporters.
“They’ve observed him dropping property items along the way and then they followed him to a residential address here in Nambour.
“It’s an unbelievable job they’ve done. They’ve clearly seen a horrific incident and seen a male running from there and somewhat taken matters into their own hands, they’ve significantly assisted us in our investigations.”
Police arrived on scene and found the man at a nearby residence in Flinders Street. A gel blaster was allegedly located in the area.
The alleged offender was apprehended and assisted officers with their investigations.
Police alleged the Mercedes was reported stolen from Landsborough about 2am that morning after the man threatened another man with a loaded firearm.
Officers on Friday night confirmed the 26-year-old was charged with slew of offences including dangerous driving causing death whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, driver callous disregard to deceased, possession of a dangerous drug (methylamphetamine) and carry loaded firearm in public.
He will appear via video link before the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Saturday.
