A woman who “threatened” cops with an axe has died in hospital after she was tasered by police.
NSW Police were called to a unit complex in Mitchell Street, Stockton near Newcastle about 12.30pm on Thursday, following reports a woman was threatening people with the weapon.
The 47-year-old woman allegedly threatened officers who arrived on the scene before she barricaded herself inside a unit.
Police were finally able to enter the property about 9.45pm after a lengthy operation involving police negotiators and specialist tactical officers.
According to NSW Police, several tactical options were deployed to take the woman into custody including the use of a taser.
She was escorted to an ambulance where her condition quickly deteriorated before being taken to John Hunter Hospital where she later died.
All circumstances around the incident are set to be investigated with a crime scene set up at the location.
The investigation will be subject to an independent review and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
The incident comes four months after the death of 95-year-old Clare Nowland, who was tasered by police at an aged care home. She fell and fractured her skull and died in hospital a week later on May 24.
